International Recognition as the Cradle of Inuit Art

The fact that Inuit art is now known worldwide is largely due to the reputation of the Puvirnituq sculptors and carvers, who, at the end of the fifties, opened one of the first carving workshops in the Canadian Arctic. The extraordinary development of Inuit art in Puvirnituq provided an impetus for the global blossoming of Inuit art and thus contributed to free this and other communities from just relying on activities related to the fur trade as a source of income.

Since the end of the forties, Puvirnituq artists focused on the cultural themes of their ancestors: hunting, fishing and camp life and, less than a decade later, characters from the local oral tradition appeared. For the past 50 years, many local artists have carved their way to fame and international recognition!
